Virginia and James Madison University Renew In-State Women’s Basketball Rivalry

Three-year agreement to alternate games at Charlottesville and Harrisonburg venues

Virginia and James Madison University (JMU) have agreed to revive their in-state women's basketball rivalry for the 2026-27 season, extending the series through the 2028-29 campaign.

The first contest will be played on November 19, 2026, at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, before the teams travel to Harrisonburg's Atlantic Union Bank Center for the 2027-28 matchup and return to Charlottesville the following year.

A Renewed Rivalry

Virginia head coach Aaron Roussell said the series is a cornerstone for building a more challenging nonconference schedule, noting JMU's strong program history and the excitement of regional matchups.

The Cavaliers currently hold a 16-11 edge in the all-time series that dates back to the 1975-76 season, adding a layer of historic significance to each new meeting.

Season tickets for the series start at $70 apiece, with family packs priced at $240 for four tickets, making the games accessible to a broad fan base.

Beyond the court, the rotating venues underscore a commitment to engaging fans across Virginia, fostering regional pride and providing a platform for both universities' supporters to rally behind their teams.

Looking Ahead

The renewed agreement not only revitalizes a storied rivalry but also sets a precedent for future in-state collaborations, promising competitive games and memorable experiences for players and spectators alike.
