A Class Built for the Future
Virginia's men's soccer program unveiled its 2026 signing class this week, a group that immediately elevates the team’s profile on the national stage. Coach George Gelnovatch announced that eight new athletes will join the Cavaliers, a cohort that Top Drawer Soccer currently ranks No. 5 among all high school classes in the country.
The class is notable not only for its collective talent but also for the breadth of its origins. Players arrive from the United States, Ghana, Brazil, Japan and other corners of the globe, each bringing a distinct cultural and competitive background that enriches the squad’s dynamic.
Among the newcomers, Isaac Mwakutuya stands out as a four‑star prospect from Houston who once captained the Houston Dynamo U‑18 side, while Prince Abanfo, a three‑star talent from Accra, honed his game at the Right to Dream Academy. Chase Gozdieski, a Californian who trained with the LA Galaxy, and Diego Guerra, a Série D champion from Recife, add further depth to an already varied attack.
Nate Young, Chase Duke and Emiliano Mercenari each bring distinct experiences from Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake and Inter Miami CF’s U‑20 setup, respectively, while Zeus Rankin’s NEPSAC All‑Star accolades from Okinawa highlight the class’s competitive edge. The group also includes Peter Tolkin, Ethan Martinez and Arnold Matshazi, who contribute additional versatility from their youth programs.
Coach Gelnovatch emphasized that the incoming players are as committed to academic excellence as they are to athletic performance. Their decision to join the University of Virginia was driven by a desire to thrive in a rigorous scholarly environment while competing at the highest level of collegiate soccer.
The coach’s vision for the class centers on filling key roster needs and fostering a culture of contribution. He believes the blend of technical skill, physicality and tactical intelligence will enable the Cavaliers to maintain their tradition of excellence and remain a perennial contender in the sport.
