Virginia starter Henry Zatkowski, who entered the game with an 8-1 record and a 4.03 ERA, labored through five innings before the bullpen was called upon. Relief efforts included Dean Kampschror and Drew Koenen, who combined to finish the final inning.
The Cavaliers managed to chip away, with AJ Gracia delivering an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth and Joe Tiroly answering with a two-run homer to narrow the gap to 10-5. Yet the rally fell short as the Gamecocks pulled away.
Head coach Chris Pollard’s frustration boiled over in the seventh, leading to his ejection after a disputed pitch-clock call. The incident added a dramatic flare to an already tense contest.
Despite the setback, several players remain in focus: Harrison Didawick, Jake Weatherspoon, Kyle Johnson, Zach Jackson, Antonio Perrotta, Noah Murray, Eric Becker, Noah Yoder, Christian Lucarelli, Lucas Hartman and Kevin Jaxel all saw action as the team looks to regroup for the must-win showdown against Southern Miss.
