Virginia’s men’s basketball program has announced a non‑conference schedule that pits the Cavaliers against some of the nation’s most respected programs.
A Grueling Non‑Conference Calendar
The first marquee matchup arrives on Dec. 2, when Virginia hosts Kentucky in the ACC/SEC Challenge, followed by a Dec. 20 showdown at Madison Square Garden against UConn, the defending national runner‑up. A few weeks later the team travels to Washington, D.C., to meet Arkansas at Capital One Arena.
All three opponents — Kentucky, UConn and Arkansas — were featured in ESPN’s Way Too Early Preseason Top 25, underscoring the intensity of the slate. The schedule also includes games against Maryland and Old Dominion, a Battle 4 Atlantis tournament that features Marquette, Texas A&M and Wake Forest, and a preseason exhibition against No. 19 Vanderbilt in Charleston, South Carolina.
Roster Continuity and New Additions
Coach Ryan Odom returns a core that includes senior guard Thijs De Ridder, who averaged 15.6 points per game last season, and guard Sam Lewis with 10.6 points per game. The team also welcomes transfers Jurian Dixon and Christian Harmon, who bring experience from UC Irvine and Arkansas State respectively, while freshman Chance Mallory is slated to start at point guard.
Testing the Limits
Odom has emphasized frequent testing as a cornerstone of preparation, and the schedule is designed to provide ample opportunities for the Cavaliers to measure themselves against elite competition.
Analysts view Virginia as a dark‑horse contender for a national title, especially with the NCAA tournament expanding to 76 teams, which could improve the team’s odds of securing a 2027 berth. While the Cavaliers finished last season with a 30‑6 record, the tougher schedule is expected to produce more losses, but the experience gained could prove invaluable as the team aims to translate its talent into postseason success.
