A New Era for the Cavaliers
The Virginia Cavaliers enter the 2026 season with a mix of uncertainty and optimism. After losing more than a dozen starters, pundits initially projected a dip in performance, but the roster’s depth and the emergence of several key players suggest a different narrative.
At the heart of the offense, Kam Courtney is slated to inherit the Cam Ross slot role. The 2024 offensive rookie of the year, Courtney played in all 14 games last season and is expected to build on that experience. His blend of quickness and football IQ positions him to have a breakout year, giving the Cavaliers a dynamic weapon in the passing game.
Alongside Courtney, running back Peyton Lewis brings a rare combination of track‑and‑field speed and power. Coaches believe Lewis has the physical tools to eclipse his previous career bests if he earns the starting role. His ability to break tackles and accelerate through gaps could transform the ground attack.
Defensively, Jason Hammond anchors the line. A preseason Fourth‑Team All‑ACC selection, Hammond started every game in 2025 and now faces the challenge of stepping up as a leader. His experience and technique are seen as vital to maintaining the defensive line’s competitiveness.
Corey Costner, the team’s SPUR, is already the clear starter at that spot. Known for his rangy play and ball‑hawking instincts, Costner made a clutch interception in the ACC Championship game while filling in for Ja’Son Prevard. His presence adds a game‑changing element to the secondary.
The Cavaliers’ coaching staff believes that the combination of these emerging talents and the continuity of the program will allow Virginia to exceed expectations. With the offseason underway, the focus is on integrating the new roles, refining schemes, and building chemistry ahead of the first kickoff.
