Offseason Outlook
Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball team finished the 2025‑26 campaign with a 19‑13 overall record and an 8‑10 mark in ACC play, a season that left the program eager to build on its momentum.
Frontcourt Focus
The offseason saw the Hokies tap into the transfer portal to shore up a backcourt that had shown flashes of brilliance, bringing in a cadre of guard talent that promises added depth and creativity.
Despite the influx of perimeter players, the coaching staff identified the frontcourt as the most pressing area for improvement, citing a lack of a versatile, experienced forward who could stretch the floor and protect the rim.
To address that need, the program secured transfers such as Oklahoma’s Kuol Atak, who averaged 7.0 points in 12.4 minutes for the Sooners, and San Diego State’s Miles Heide, whose two‑point shooting percentage topped the Mountain West last season.
Returning senior Amani Hansberry anchors the frontcourt alongside the newcomers, while Musa Sagnia and Solomon Davis add further depth, giving the staff a blend of experience and youthful energy.
Coaching Perspective
Coach Mike Young and assistant Ben Hammond have expressed confidence that the new roster configuration will allow the team to compete more effectively when league play begins, especially after a schedule that notably avoided a matchup with Duke.
The 2026‑27 season is slated to open in early November, giving the Hokies a short window to integrate the transfers and fine‑tune their rotations before the first ACC battles.
