Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball program has added a new piece to its lineup with the commitment of guard Efrem 'Butta' Johnson, a transfer from Clemson. The move comes as the Hokies navigate an offseason defined by extensive roster turnover, having lost six key players to the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Johnson arrives after a season in which he averaged 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game, shooting 38.5 percent from the field, 35.5 percent from three‑point range and 83 percent from the free‑throw line. His most productive year came at UAB, where he posted 11.2 points per game in 2023‑24, and he previously contributed 7.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists over four seasons at the Alabama school.
Coach Mike Young, who has been reshaping the squad after the departures, described the addition as a logical step in restoring depth and competitiveness. The Hokies have also welcomed other newcomers, including Miles Heide, Musa Sagnia, Kuol Atak, Jaylen Curry, Isaiah Elohim and Ethan Copeland, each bringing a mix of experience and potential.
A strategic move for the Hokies
The influx of transfers reflects a broader strategy to plug the gaps left by departing seniors and to inject experience into a young roster. By targeting players with proven collegiate minutes, Virginia Tech hopes to accelerate its return to contention in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The move also underscores the growing influence of the transfer portal on program building, as schools navigate an offseason defined by constant roster turnover. For Virginia Tech, securing Johnson’s scoring ability and free‑throw reliability could prove decisive in upcoming non‑conference matchups.
