Visa hurdle derails Jovanovic’s American dream

Montenegrin forward opts for Buducnost Podgorica after St. John’s visa complications

Montenegrin forward Djordije Jovanovic, a 2025‑26 ABA and Euro Cup veteran, will not wear the red and white of St. John’s University in the upcoming season. Unresolved visa complications prevented the player from traveling to the United States, leaving the program with an open scholarship spot.

Visa hurdle derails Jovanovic's American dream

The decision follows the removal of Gildas Gimenez from the projected lineup after he was ruled academically ineligible, making Jovanovic the second player to be taken out of the roster before the season began.

Jovanovic confirmed that he will return to Europe, signing with Buducnost Podgorica for the 2026‑27 campaign. The move comes as the team has already welcomed Quinn Ellis, Lazar Stojkovic and Babacar Sane, who have participated in offseason workouts in Queens, New York.

The roster reshuffle also includes the loss of senior guard Donnie Freeman, who was ruled out for the entire season after an Achilles injury, while the program secured Indiana transfer Reed Bailey, who recently received eligibility for a fifth year.

Rick Pitino, the head coach, described Jovanovic as a player with extensive G‑League and Montenegrin experience, highlighting his ability to run both offensive sets and anchor defensive schemes.

Despite the departures, St. John’s remains linked to prized Auburn recruit Keyshawn Hall, who continues to be a focal point of the recruiting class.
