Eduard Mikhailovich Sandler, 44, president and head coach of Dynamo Vladivostok, died on July 28 after his jet‑ski collided with a rocky embankment in Amur Bay, Vladivostok. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene, and authorities have opened an investigation into the crash.
A Coach Who Built a Dynasty
Sandler’s tenure at Dynamo Vladivostok was marked by rapid ascent. In 2024 the club captured the Russian Super League championship, and the following year the team secured a spot in the VTB United League for the 2026‑27 season, a move many view as the culmination of his strategic vision.
Prior to Dynamo, he coached several regional clubs including Spartak Primorye, Sakhalin and Vostok‑65, honing a reputation for developing talent and instilling disciplined systems.
Tributes from the Basketball World
Former NBA player Andrei Kirilenko praised Sandler as “a passionate basketball figure with a unique personality who embodied the spirit of Primorsky Krai.” The Russian Basketball Federation issued a statement calling his death “an irreplaceable loss for the Primorsky Krai sports community and Russian basketball.”
A memorial has been erected at Dynamo’s training facility, where fans, players and staff gather to pay their respects, reflecting the deep imprint he left on the local community.
Looking Forward
While the investigation continues, the club’s leadership has pledged to honor Sandler’s legacy by maintaining the competitive standards he set. The upcoming VTB United League entry is seen as both a tribute and a continuation of his ambition to elevate Russian basketball on the international stage.
