Tennessee baseball has clinched its seventh straight berth in the NCAA Tournament, a milestone that underscores the program’s steady ascent under first‑year head coach Josh Elander.
A Turnaround in the Making
The Vols closed the regular season at 37‑19 overall and 15‑15 in the SEC, a record that belies a rocky start that included defeats to UCLA, Kent State, Wright State, Georgia and a sweep at the hands of Vanderbilt.
What has stood out is the offense, which has now logged more than 100 home runs for the fifth consecutive year, a testament to the hitting depth cultivated by the staff.
Pitching, however, has been the lingering question mark. Recent series against Texas and Oklahoma exposed inconsistencies, but a standout outing by right‑hander Tegan Kuhns on May 8 against Texas offered a glimpse of stability.
Head coach Tony Vitello praised the team’s resilience, noting that the combination of veteran arms and a potent bat lineup could make the Vols a formidable opponent in any super regional.
Freshman shortstop Landon Mack has contributed a .320 average, adding depth to the lineup, while veteran reliever John Adams has been a steady presence in the bullpen, often tasked with preserving tight games.
With the tournament field now set, the Vols are poised to test their mettle against elite competition, and many analysts believe that if the pitching staff can find consistency, Tennessee could surprise many in the regional and super regional rounds.
