Tennessee baseball is entering a pivotal rebuilding phase as the program looks to replenish a roster depleted by transfers, graduations and the MLB draft. Coach Josh Elander has already locked in his first transfer addition, two‑way standout Braydon Kersey from Mercer, who posted a .325 batting average, hit 21 home runs and threw 20 innings as a designated hitter.
The departure list is extensive; fourteen Vols have entered the portal, including a regular starter and several depth pieces. Among those expected to move on are starting shortstop Manny Marin and third baseman Henry Ford, while weekend starters Landon Mack and Cam Appenzeller are slated to return and anchor the rotation.
Building the Pitching Staff
To shore up a shaky bullpen, the staff will rely on returning relievers Will Haas, Nic Abraham and Chandler Day, all of whom appeared in a season marked by inconsistency. The coaching staff is still searching for an additional starter to complement the emerging rotation.
The left side of the infield also faces an overhaul, as the team must replace both Marin and Ford. The search for experienced infield talent will be a priority, with the program eyeing players who can fill the void at shortstop and third base.
Outfield Dynamics
Outfield depth is another question mark. With Reese Chapman and Garrett Wright potentially departing, the Vols need impact bats to provide power and spark. The new recruits are expected to bring a mix of speed and slugging to the lineup.
Despite the churn, the arrival of a talented freshman class offers a foundation for future growth. Coach Elander remains focused on blending youth with the few established pieces, aiming to construct a more balanced roster for the 2027 campaign.
