The Wake Forest University field hockey team, ranked No.7 nationally, delivered a commanding 6-1 victory over Ohio University on Saturday, showcasing a blend of speed and firepower that left the visitors scrambling.
Opening Surge
Although Ohio managed to open the scoring with an early goal in the first quarter, the Deacons quickly answered, with senior Rory Heslin finding the net before halftime, setting the tone for a dominant second half.
The third quarter proved decisive as Wake Forest erupted for four goals, each contributed by different attackers, including Ava Moore, Faye Janse, Sarah Mudd and Bianca Rees-Gibbs, stretching the lead to 5-1 and overwhelming Ohio's defense.
In the fourth quarter, Moore added a second goal, completing a brace that sealed the 6-1 result, while the Deacons maintained a relentless attack, finishing with 27 shots compared to Ohio's solitary effort after the break.
Coach Averill highlighted the team's mobility and depth, noting that the depth of talent across the roster bodes well for future challenges, especially as the squad prepares to travel to Kentner Stadium for a Friday night showdown against VCU.
