The Wakulla High School football team is entering its season with a solemn purpose: to honor Kyler Jones, a 16‑year‑old who lost his life in a diving accident during the July 4 weekend. His story has become a rallying point for players, coaches, and families alike.
In a gesture that has resonated through the locker room and the stands, the squad has placed a jersey patch and helmet stickers bearing the number 11 in Kyler’s memory, ensuring his presence is felt at every snap.
A Season of Remembrance
Head coach Derek Allen, who has mentored Kyler since his Pee Wee days, said the team’s mission is to embody the fearless spirit and joyous outlook that defined the young player.
Wyatt Jones, Kyler’s cousin and teammate, recalled how the teenager would “look down on us from the sidelines,” a image that now fuels the squad’s determination.
Molly Jones Bowell, Kyler’s older sister, expressed how the tribute has become a source of comfort for her family, noting that football was the centerpiece of his teenage years.
Community members have rallied behind the effort, attending the first game on August 14 and offering support that underscores the deep connections forged on and off the field.
Remembering Kyler
As the season unfolds, the Wildcats will carry Kyler’s number 11 on their helmets, a constant reminder that the values he championed—courage, camaraderie, and living life fully—are still very much alive within the team.
