Walt Hazzard’s Journey to the Hall of Fame
Walt Hazzard’s name has become synonymous with UCLA basketball excellence. In the 1963‑64 season he guided the Bruins to their inaugural NCAA men’s basketball championship, completing an undefeated run that remains a benchmark for college teams. His performance earned him the Most Valuable Player award at the Final Four and opened the door to an Olympic gold medal with the United States in Tokyo later that year.
After his playing days, Hazzard returned to Westwood as head coach from 1984‑85 through 1987‑88. During that tenure he captured the program’s first National Invitation Tournament title in 1985 and led the Bruins to a Pac‑10 regular‑season crown, a conference tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1987. His coaching stint, though brief, reinforced his deep connection to the university.
Hazzard’s professional career spanned a decade in the NBA, where he logged 724 games with averages of 12.6 points and 4.9 assists. The upcoming induction on October 22, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri, will place Hazzard among the ten former UCLA players and coaches enshrined in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
