Warde Manuel, who has steered the University of Michigan’s athletic department for nearly a decade, announced that he will depart at the end of the year as part of a negotiated buyout. The agreement comes after a series of investigations that have cast a shadow over the program, particularly those involving former football coach Sherrone Moore and his relationship with an executive assistant.
The university retained a law firm at a cost of roughly $12 million to examine the culture within the athletic division, uncovering issues that ultimately led to Manuel’s exit. While the department boasts a $250 million annual budget, 29 varsity teams and a workforce of over 400 staff members, the revelations have prompted a leadership change.
Manuel’s legacy includes four national championships achieved during his watch, a figure that reflects both his strategic vision and the competitive edge of Michigan’s programs. He inherited a storied legacy, having played for the Wolverines under the late Bo Schembechler and also competed on the track team, experiences that shaped his deep connection to the campus.
Hired on Jan. 29, 2016, Manuel signed a contract extension in 2024 that was set to run through June 2030, a testament to the confidence placed in him by the administration. Under his oversight the department celebrated a football national title under former coach Jim Harbaugh and a men’s basketball championship earlier this year guided by coach Dusty May, moments that highlighted the department’s resurgence.
In recognition of his contributions, Manuel received the John L. Toner Award in 2024, an honor that underscores his impact on college athletics. His departure marks the end of an era that blended athletic ambition with a complex cultural landscape, leaving the university poised for a new chapter.
