A New Era for Power Hockey
Warrington Power Sports Club is gearing up for its inaugural full‑season campaign in power hockey, a dynamic sport designed for athletes who use powered wheelchairs. The club’s first set of fixtures begins this weekend, marking a milestone for a discipline that blends speed, strategy and teamwork.
Power hockey uses specially adapted wheelchairs equipped with bumpers, allowing safe, high‑impact play. Funded by Sport England, the sport welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, offering a competitive outlet that challenges conventional notions of disability sport.
The club’s partnership with Total Steelwork and Fabrication provides crucial sponsorship, yet it still relies on individual player support. Sponsorships are priced at £50 per year and cover league entry and future training sessions, a modest contribution that can make a decisive difference.
Their opening match pits them against Wakefield at Padgate Academy’s sports hall. Having finished fourth in the 2025 Slater & Gordon Cup, the team enters the season with a respectable debut and a growing community of supporters who attend the club’s monthly sessions in the same venue.
Ellis Palmer, chair of Warrington Power Sports Club and vice‑chair of the GB Power Hockey Association, says the launch represents more than a sporting milestone; it is a step toward greater inclusion. “We want to show that power hockey is not just an alternative, but a thrilling, professional‑level competition,” he explains.
Beyond the scoreboard, the club aims to foster a supportive network for disabled athletes and their allies, encouraging participation and visibility across the region. With backing from local businesses and national funding bodies, the organizers hope to expand the league and inspire similar initiatives nationwide.
