Warriors Fall in State Semifinal
The Waupun Warriors saw their championship dreams evaporate on a humid June evening in Grand Chute, as a 5‑3 defeat at the hands of Kenosha St. Joseph ended their run in the WIAA Division 2 state tournament semifinals. An early weather front forced the game to a compressed schedule, but the Warriors entered the contest with the same poise they had shown all season.
Finishing the year at 23‑6, the team capped a remarkable campaign by capturing the Capitol‑North conference title and earning a return to the state stage for the first time since 2018. Seven seniors, many of whom grew up playing together on the same Little League fields, fought valiantly until the final out, embodying a camaraderie that defined the clubhouse.
The scoring opened with a Waupun run in the top of the second inning, sparked by an error that plated the first run. Kenosha answered quickly when LSU commit Dominic Santarelli launched a home run to seize a 2‑1 lead. Freshman pitcher Sutton Nelson answered the call on the mound, delivering 5.1 innings of work that featured nine strikeouts and kept the Warriors within striking distance.
Zach Rizzo, the opposing pitcher, limited Waupun to three hits and one earned run over five frames, but the Warriors were not done. In the seventh inning they mounted a rally that threatened to extend the game, loading the bases and forcing a tense finish before a final out sealed the 5‑3 verdict.
Coach Travis Hull, who has mentored many of the players since they were seven, expressed deep pride in the team’s journey. “Their hard work and bond have been evident every step of the way,” Hull said, noting that his own son Emmett was among the seniors who gave everything for the program.
Though the loss stings, the Warriors leave with their heads held high, a legacy of resilience and community pride that will inspire the next generation of players in Waupun.
