The Waseca Hockey Association announced that it welcomed 26 first‑year Mite/8U players for the 2024‑25 season, a jump from just 12 the previous year. The surge represents the largest single‑season increase the program has seen, and it includes a record 14 girls, underscoring the rapid expansion of the girls’ program.
The association’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2026 it received the Dick’s Sporting Goods ‘Grow the Game Award’, recognizing its success in attracting new participants and making hockey more affordable for families in Waseca and the surrounding district.
Community‑Driven Initiatives Fuel Growth
Key to the expansion has been a suite of community‑focused programs. A ‘Bring a Friend’ promotion offers a $50 credit for each referral, while first‑year players benefit from waived registration fees and equipment support. The ‘Family Mentorship Program’ pairs newcomers with experienced families, easing the onboarding process and building a supportive network.
Partnerships with the Minnesota Wild Foundation, TRIA Orthopedics and other local stakeholders have amplified the impact of these initiatives. Together they have helped lower cost barriers and create a pipeline that can sustain multiple teams at each age level, including plans for a 15U squad through a co‑op with Faribault.

Association leaders say the next phase will focus on developing two teams at every competitive level and on deepening collaborations with neighboring communities.
