On August 4, 2024, Brett Ballard, the head coach of Washburn University’s men’s basketball team, was involved in a single‑vehicle crash near Topeka, Kansas. His 2024 Ford F‑150 left the roadway and struck a bridge pillar, a delineator post and an embankment, causing severe injuries that required immediate medical attention.
Ballard, 46, was the only occupant of the vehicle and was wearing his seat belt at the time of impact. Emergency responders transported him to a regional hospital where he remains under treatment. The incident was investigated by the Kansas Highway Patrol, which confirmed the sequence of events and the extent of the damage.
The coach has been at the helm of Washburn’s program since 2017, guiding the team to six NCAA Tournament appearances and earning a reputation for developing talent. Prior to his current role, he served as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Bill Self at the University of Kansas, contributing to the 2008 national championship squad. Before Kansas, he held assistant positions at Wake Forest University and the University of Tulsa.
Ballard’s family includes his wife Kelly and their three children — sons Kaden and Brooks and daughter Breagan. Kaden, a freshman on the Washburn roster last season, appeared in 14 games, while the rest of the household has been described as a source of steady support during his recovery.
The basketball community has rallied around the coach, with messages of prayer from former colleagues such as Steve Forbes of Wake Forest and Lora Westling of Washburn. Kansas beat writer Matt Tait publicly expressed his hope for Ballard’s swift recovery, calling him “a better dude” and extending thoughts to his family.
