A Shock to the Program
Washburn University announced Tuesday night that head coach Brett Ballard was involved in a serious one‑vehicle crash that left him with critical injuries. Emergency responders transported him to a regional hospital where he remains under intensive care.
A Career Built on Tradition
Ballard’s journey in college basketball spans more than two decades. A 1998 graduate of Hutchinson High School, he played two seasons at Hutchinson Community College before contributing to the University of Kansas’s 2001‑02 Final Four run. He later served as a student assistant under Bill Self, then rose through the ranks to become video coordinator and director of operations at Kansas, before leading Baker University and eventually returning to Kansas as an assistant before taking the Washburn helm in 2017.
University Leadership Extends Support
Washburn President JuliAnn Mazachek issued a heartfelt statement, expressing deep sadness over Ballard’s condition and pledging support for his family and the basketball program. The university has called on the broader community to respect the family’s privacy during this challenging time.
A Program on the Rise
Under Ballard’s guidance, the Washburn Ichabods captured an NCAA Division II Final Four berth in the 2024‑25 season and posted a 31‑2 record in 2025‑26, underscoring his impact on the program’s resurgence.
The incident has sparked an outpouring of solidarity from former colleagues, players and fans across the Midwest, all hoping for Ballard’s swift recovery.
