Preseason Rankings Set the Stage
Washburn University’s soccer and volleyball programs entered the 2025 season with preseason accolades that set a high bar for the upcoming campaign. Both squads earned spots in the NCAA Tournament semifinals last year, and this year’s polls reflect that momentum.
The Ichabods sit atop the MIAA preseason poll and are ranked fourth nationally, a testament to the program’s steady growth. Head coach Davy Phillips stresses that the team’s focus is on preparation and cohesion rather than external rankings.
On the volleyball side, the Ichabods captured the top spot in the MIAA poll and are positioned eighth in the national rankings. Coach Chris Herron notes that conversations about rankings are reserved for a single moment during the season, allowing the team to stay grounded.
The first test arrives Thursday when the soccer team faces No.19 Maryville, while the volleyball roster will begin its schedule at the Washburn Invitational, a four‑match showcase that includes a showdown with a ranked opponent.
Senior libero Taylor Rottinghaus emphasizes that the internal pressure to meet the preseason expectations is a driving force, while Lili Everley, a key contributor, is among those ready to translate the poll positions into performance.
