Washington College announced this week that it will add women’s flag football to its varsity athletics portfolio, marking a significant step toward expanding opportunities for female student‑athletes in Maryland.
The program will launch as a club competition during the 2026‑27 academic year, with full varsity status targeted for the spring of 2028, positioning the college among the first institutions in the state to field a collegiate flag football team.
Strategic Alignment with NCAA Priorities
The move dovetails with the NCAA’s recent designation of flag football as an emerging sport and its ongoing effort to include the discipline in the 2028 Olympic Games. The NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact recommended the sport for championship status in May 2024, a milestone that aligns with the college’s broader mission of inclusive competition.
Leadership Perspective
Thad Moore, Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics, said the addition reflects the college’s strategic plan to broaden athletic offerings while supporting the growth of women’s sports at the collegiate level.
Sarah Feyerherm, Vice President for Student Affairs, welcomed the new athletes to “Goose Nation,” underscoring the institution’s commitment to fostering a vibrant campus community for all participants.
Prospective student‑athletes seeking more information can reach out to Jack Despeaux, who will coordinate recruitment and outreach efforts.
