Reimagining the Cougars' home field
Washington State University has re‑engineered the layout of Gesa Field for the upcoming season, shifting the visiting team's sideline to sit directly in front of the passionate Cougar student section. The traditional boundary between the crowd and the bench has been erased, placing the opposition just a few feet from the roar of the fans.
This repositioning flips the WSU sideline to the opposite side of the field, creating a narrow corridor where the student section now stands between the visitors and the home bench. The proximity has turned the area into a hotbed of chants, signs and the occasional Fireball shooter, all aimed at unsettling the guests.
Coach Kirby Moore's vision
Head coach Kirby Moore explained that the alteration is more than a gimmick; it is a calculated effort to amplify the stadium's electric atmosphere. By forcing the opposing team to play against a wall of enthusiastic supporters, Moore believes the Cougars can harness that energy to gain a tangible competitive edge.
The revamped configuration will make its debut in the home opener on September 19, when the Cougars host Duquesne at Martin Stadium. The new arrangement promises a heightened sense of intensity from the first snap, as the student body looks to translate its newfound proximity into a roar that reverberates across the field.
