Watertown, New York, is reconfiguring how it dole out ice time at its lone municipal arena, a move that brings together several local sports outfits under one roof.
For years the Watertown Hockey Association and the Watertown Figure Skating Club have held the lion’s share of the rink’s schedule, their programs forming the backbone of the city’s winter sports culture.
A newer entrant, Power Play Sports, had asked for eight prime‑time slots but was allotted only two, both of which fall during the most coveted hours of the day.
Council member Doug Osborne described the council’s decision as a pragmatic compromise, an attempt to balance the entrenched needs of long‑standing groups with the aspirations of a rising organization.
Ginger Sherrill, president of the Watertown Hockey Association, voiced disappointment that the schedule would not be finalized until later in the week, a delay that she said hampers planning for youth programs.
