Waukee Northwest’s girls soccer team captured the Class 3A championship on Saturday, edging Valley 2-1 in a tightly contested final. The Wolves finished the season undefeated at 14-0-3, becoming the first squad to repeat in Iowa’s largest class since 2011.
A Season Defined by Resolve
Coach Tony Gabriel, who announced that this match would be his final game, praised his players’ determination and heart. He highlighted the team’s ability to stay focused even after Valley’s goal cut into the lead.
The match opened with a swift strike from Cora Sundet, who netted both of Northwest’s goals in the first half. Valley answered with a goal from Bryn Kenworthy, but the Wolves maintained their advantage for the remaining 40 minutes.
With 13 returners on the roster, the team’s youth suggests a foundation for continued dominance. Their blend of experience and fresh talent positions them as a perennial contender in the coming seasons.
The victory also completed a season sweep over Valley, having defeated them 2-1 earlier in the year. The Wolves’ resilience and realistic approach, as Gabriel noted, underscored the character that defined their campaign.
