In July 2025, Wayne State University announced the creation of its first-ever women's soccer team, a move championed by President Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy and Director of Athletics Erika Wallace. The initiative aims to give young women in Detroit a pathway to earn degrees, compete at a high level, and shape a new cultural identity within the city's athletic landscape.
A Vision Rooted in Opportunity
Head Coach Doug Steinard, whose career spans stints at Rochester College, Rochester High School, Lawrence Tech, and Michigan Jaguars FC, was tapped to lead the program. His extensive background in technical direction and club coaching brings a disciplined yet adaptable approach, emphasizing player development and a cohesive team culture from day one.
Recruitment efforts have already yielded a promising mix of talent. Freshman forward Ellie Whalen, who previously trained under both Steinard and club coach Hasan Daoud, cited the clear connection to the program as a decisive factor in her commitment. The roster is nearing completion, with 17 freshmen and 16 transfer players set to join the squad by May.
Investing in Infrastructure
The university's board of governors approved a $5.2 million upgrade to the Wayne State Soccer Complex, providing state‑of‑the‑art facilities that will support the team's training and match needs. The investment underscores the institution's commitment to gender equity and long‑term athletic excellence.
The program's debut match is scheduled for August 27 against Northwood, marking the first official game in Wayne State women's soccer history. Players like Reagan Brengman, a graduate transfer defender with Division II experience, are eager to lay the groundwork for traditions, mentor younger teammates, and build a legacy that reflects the community they represent.
