The Waynesburg University men’s and women’s soccer squads are gearing up for an unprecedented summer adventure that will take them across the Atlantic to Brazil.
Organized by the faith‑driven nonprofit Missionary Athletes International, the week‑long excursion blends competition, coaching and community service into a single, purpose‑filled itinerary.
A Journey Rooted in Service
For both head coaches, George DeAugustino and Treg Lunger, this trip marks the first time they will lead their teams abroad, extending the university’s mission of athletic outreach beyond domestic borders.
The NCAA restricts international travel to once every three years for collegiate programs, making this opportunity all the more significant for the Bears and their rivals.
Last season the men posted a 7‑6‑5 record while the women finished a stellar 17‑3‑2, advancing to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title match and earning a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament.
On the Ground in Brazil
During their stay the squads will contest friendly matches against local clubs, run coaching clinics for youth players and engage in service projects aimed at strengthening neighborhoods.
Their itinerary includes stops in São Paulo, Monte Santo, Atibaia and the scenic Pedra Grande Mountain, each chosen for its unique blend of cultural richness and community need.
Beyond the scoreline, the coaches stress that the tour is designed to use the universal language of soccer as a conduit for sharing the Gospel and fostering lasting relationships.
Coach Lunger brings prior experience from Missionary Athletes International’s domestic programs, bringing a seasoned perspective to the international stage.
The trip also offers a chance for the players to experience Brazil’s vibrant football culture, from the bustling streets of São Paulo to the tranquil mountain vistas of Pedra Grande.
University officials hope the venture will inspire future generations of student‑athletes to view sport as a platform for mission work and global citizenship.
