Waynesburg University is currently without a head baseball coach after Michael Impellittieri stepped down following two seasons that produced a combined 20‑56 record. Impellittieri, who took over from Perry Cunningham, leaves a program that struggled both overall and in conference play, finishing with a 7‑34 record in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
A Coach on the Move
Before arriving at Waynesburg, Impellittieri had built his coaching résumé at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, where he developed a reputation for player development and strategic growth. His departure was framed by Athletic Director Tim Fusina as a personal decision, with Impellittieri pursuing new opportunities beyond the Yellow Jackets' roster.
Perry Cunningham, who succeeded Impellittieri and guided the team to a 23‑win season that placed the program tied for second in the conference, has now taken a new role as head coach at Waynesburg Central High School. Cunningham's ascent illustrates the upward trajectory the university hopes to replicate at the collegiate level.
Tim Fusina, the university's athletic director, emphasized that the resignation was not performance‑related but rather a personal choice. He noted that the administration is committed to finding a coach who can bring continuity, improve recruiting pipelines, and stabilize a program that has relied on interim assistants in recent weeks.
Strategic Priorities
The university's strategic focus includes expanding recruitment efforts throughout Western Pennsylvania, a region that has historically supplied talent to the program. By strengthening local ties, officials hope to attract prospects who can compete at the NCAA Division III level and elevate the team's overall competitiveness.
In the interim, assistant coaches have taken on managerial responsibilities, ensuring that fall practice begins as scheduled in early October. The hiring timeline is being accelerated to avoid disruption, and the search committee has already received expressions of interest from former Waynesburg players and several PAC assistant coaches who are eager to contribute to the program's resurgence.
