Weber State University's football program is winding down its fall camp, and both defensive coordinator Gavin Fowler and head coach Eric Kjar have taken the opportunity to assess the squad's progress. The Wildcats' offense and defense have shown competitive ups and downs, with the offense occasionally dominating during practice sessions.
Defensive Adjustments
Fowler expressed frustration with the defense's performance on third‑down conversions and red‑zone touchdowns, areas that will need tightening before the season opener. He challenged starters to maintain focus while urging second‑string players to step up and fill the gaps.
Despite the defensive concerns, Fowler noted a healthy balance between the two units, emphasizing that the offense's occasional dominance is a positive sign of depth. Head coach Eric Kjar echoed this sentiment, describing the team's trajectory as one of steady improvement.
Key contributors have emerged across the roster. Noah Kjar highlighted running back Spencer Ferguson for his consistency, ability to break tackles and maintain eligibility. Defensive lineman Kevin Johnson has shown marked improvement in physicality, while Chevy Robinson has excelled in pass‑rush situations.
Leadership on the defensive side comes from Trevian Tribble and Raimoana Tinirauarii, whose guidance has helped younger players adapt. Freshmen Semisi Kinikini and Dyson Parker are also making strong contributions in their first year, adding depth to the line.
At cornerback, Tajon Evans and Tre Turner have stood out during camp, showcasing the secondary's potential. Newcomers Omar Shah and Seth Rigtrup, who have been sidelined by injuries, are beginning to show promise as they return to full health.
The Wildcats will begin scouting Northern Colorado early in the final week of camp, preparing for their opener on August 28. The team aims to be fully ready for the matchup, with both coaches confident that the work done in camp will translate into a competitive performance.
