Week 2 Michigan High School Football Rankings Spot Regional Powerhouses

Top teams in the Southeast, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast begin to define the early season narrative

The Detroit News has released its Week 2 high school football rankings, dividing the state’s 83 counties into four geographic regions: Southeast, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast.

Regional Leaders Emerging

In the Southeast, Detroit Catholic Central sits at the top with a 1‑0 record, while the region also showcases powerhouses such as Detroit Cass Tech, Saline and Birmingham Brother Rice.

The Southwest leader, East Kentwood, also opens the season 1‑0 and is joined by contenders like Grand Rapids Catholic Central and Grand Rapids West Catholic.

Northwest and Northeast Frontiers

Mount Pleasant leads the Northwest, a zone that stretches into the Upper Peninsula and includes teams from Menominee and Kingsley, while Midland Dow holds the summit in the Northeast, where Ogemaw Heights and Gladwin round out the early leaders.

The rankings are refreshed each week throughout the season, reflecting how the concentration of strong programs in the Southeast and Southwest continues to shape the statewide picture.
