Weldon Nelms Returns to Lead Iowa Park Football

Veteran coach aims to restore winning tradition after a challenging season

Weldon Nelms has been appointed head football coach and interim athletic director at Iowa Park High School, bringing his extensive coaching background back to a program he led from 1994 to 1999.

The Hawks finished the previous season with a 3‑7 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in twelve years, a result that prompted the school board to seek a fresh direction.

Nelms, who amassed 242 career wins and captured two state titles with Wimberley in 2005 and 2011, also won 13 district championships across stops at Weatherford, Rotan, Glen Rose, Lubbock Estacado, Springlake‑Earth and his former Iowa Park tenure.

He will be inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in July, underscoring the respect he commands across the state.

A new era for the Hawks

Succeeding Bryan Wood, who guided the team for a single season in 2025, Nelms inherits a squad eager to rebound and a schedule that opens with a matchup against Henrietta on August 28.

The upcoming season will test his ability to blend tradition with new strategies, as the community watches closely while the coach prepares to restore the program’s former prominence.
