Wes Mendes Named ACC Pitcher of the Year
Wes Mendes, a junior left‑hander for Florida State, was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Pitcher of the Year, becoming the third Seminole in program history to receive the honor.
His season statistics underscore the award: a 9‑3 record, 109 strikeouts and two complete games, coupled with a 23‑walk, 61‑hit tally over 84 innings. He also logged four outings with double‑digit strikeouts, highlighting his ability to dominate opposing lineups.
Beyond the numbers, Mendes earned midseason All‑America recognition on Perfect Game’s first team and D1Baseball’s second team, while also appearing on the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list and Baseball America’s Pitcher of the Year watch list.
His performance helped Florida State secure first‑team All‑ACC honors, and the accolades extended to teammates John Abraham, Trey Beard, Brayden Dowd and John Stuetzer, each of whom also earned All‑ACC selections.
The Seminoles are slated to open the ACC tournament on Friday, May 22, a milestone that Mendes hopes to build upon as he continues his campaign for the Dick Howser Trophy.
A Season Defined by Dominance
Mendes’ impact transcended individual stats; his consistency on the mound gave the Seminoles a reliable anchor throughout a demanding schedule, allowing the team to compete at the highest level in the conference.
Coaches and analysts alike praised his poise under pressure, noting that his ability to limit walks while maintaining a high strikeout rate was pivotal in tight games.
Looking Ahead to the ACC Tournament
With the tournament opener set for May 22, the Seminoles enter as a formidable contender, buoyed by Mendes’ presence and the collective experience of a core group that includes multiple All‑ACC honorees.
The upcoming matches will test the team’s depth, but Mendes’ recent accolades suggest he will remain a key factor in Florida State’s pursuit of a deep run.
