A glimpse of baseball's grassroots
A crew from Major League Baseball recently turned its cameras toward the West Akron Baseball & Softball League, capturing the energy of youngsters competing on Resnik Field at the Judith Resnik Community Learning Center. The footage, shot during regular season games, will soon be woven into a pregame segment that will greet fans gathering for the 2026 All‑Star Game in Philadelphia.
Founded in 1957, the West Akron league is a nonprofit dedicated to teaching baseball, softball and co‑ed T‑ball to children from ages five through fourteen. Its mission, as league officials explain, is to nurture the basic skills that allow participants to climb the competitive ladder while instilling the camaraderie that defines community sport.
Spotlight on the next generation
The video highlights two H‑League squads — the Cubs and the Rubber Ducks — composed of nine‑ and ten‑year‑olds who represent the spirit of baseball in neighborhoods across the country. Their performances, filmed over several afternoons, were selected to illustrate how grassroots programs keep the sport vibrant beyond the professional arena.
According to league coordinator Mike Dies, the experience of being filmed was both exhilarating and humbling for the players and volunteers. "Seeing the kids light up when they hear their names on a national broadcast is a reminder why we started this league," Dies said. Fellow organizer Matt Timbrook echoed the sentiment, noting that the exposure could inspire other municipalities to invest in similar youth initiatives.
The pregame feature will debut on July 14, just before the first pitch of the All‑Star Game, and will be aired on Fox. Coverage begins at 7 p.m., giving viewers a brief but vivid portrait of the league’s history, its community roots, and the bright futures of its youngest participants.
