West Central Valley’s baseball program entered the 2026 season with a clear point of emphasis: the middle of the diamond. Head coach Isaac Taylor has built his game plan around mastering second base, viewing it as the linchpin for both scoring opportunities and preventing opponents from capitalizing.
Offensively, a runner stationed at second often becomes the catalyst for a rally, turning a single into a potential run‑scoring situation. Taylor’s drills, practiced three times a week, aim to put a hitter in scoring position with precision, giving the Wildcats a tactical edge in tight games.
Defensively, the same focus translates into a disciplined effort to keep the opposing offense off the bag, forcing teams to rely on alternative pathways to plate runs. By controlling second base, the Wildcats limit the opponent’s flexibility and create pressure that can shift momentum.
The Wildcats finished the year at 9‑20, a record that reflects the growing pains of a young squad. Their final test came on July 7, when they fell 10‑0 to Van Meter in the Class 2A Substate 6 Second Round, a game that underscored both the promise and the gaps in Taylor’s system.
