In Cincinnati's historic West End, a new nonprofit basketball program is giving young athletes more than just a chance to play the game. The West End Knights, a free AAU team, offer a structured, supportive environment where sport meets personal growth.
The organization was launched in April by Isaiah Wilmont, a librarian at the Cincinnati Public Library’s West End branch. Wilmont created the team to provide positive outlets for youth, emphasizing discipline, accountability and confidence both on and off the court.
The Knights currently field about 20 players between the ages of 11 and 16, practicing every Friday night at the Lincoln Recreation Center. For many participants, the weekly sessions become a cornerstone of their routine, fostering camaraderie and a sense of belonging.
Fifteen‑year‑old Jerome Spencer, who joined the squad earlier this year, credits his coach with sharpening his skills and offering steady guidance. "Having someone who believes in you makes a huge difference," Spencer said, highlighting the program’s impact on his personal development.
A Vision Beyond the Court
Looking ahead, Wilmont hopes to secure funding that would allow the Knights to grow into a larger club featuring multiple sports teams. The expansion would not only broaden athletic opportunities but also deepen the program’s reach throughout the West End and surrounding neighborhoods.
