From July 26 to August 1, 2024, the U.S. Military Academy’s men’s basketball squad traveled to Puerto Rico for a week‑long immersion that combined preseason conditioning with leadership workshops, cultural tours, and community service.
A Week of Training and Cultural Exchange
The cadets began with a staff ride at U.S. Coast Guard Base San Juan’s La Puntilla, where they studied the island’s maritime heritage and the strategic role of the Coast Guard in the region, gaining a deeper appreciation for Puerto Rico’s military history.
Engaging the Community
At Fort Buchanan’s Child and Youth Services, the team ran a basketball clinic for local children, teaching fundamentals while emphasizing teamwork and discipline. The visit also featured a 3‑point challenge in the installation’s fitness center and a high‑profile match against Los Bori, a professional Puerto Rican select team.
Reflections from the Cadets
Team captain Ryan Curry described the experience as a meaningful opportunity to compete against professional players and mentor youth, noting how basketball can build lasting relationships. Rising junior Nnaemeka Ikechi highlighted the island’s culture, history, and hospitality as a personal takeaway that broadened his perspective.
Head Coach Kevin Kuick emphasized that the trip sharpened the squad both on the court and off, reinforcing the Army’s core values of service and cultural empathy. Los Bori Head Coach Steven Miró praised the Black Knights for their discipline, respect, and teamwork during the competition.
Beyond the games, the visit strengthened partnerships between West Point and Puerto Rican institutions, offering cadets a broader perspective that will inform their future roles as Army leaders. The Black Knights departed Puerto Rico with experiences that extended far beyond basketball.
