Redding, California – A Championship Night
The West Valley baseball squad captured its second straight Northern Section Division III title on Tuesday, downing Orland 10‑2 in a game that felt more like a showcase of depth than a mere victory.
Sophomore pitcher Aiden Sweet entered the contest with a jam in the opening frame but quickly settled, delivering six strikeouts while allowing only two runs. His composure set the tone for a team that leaned on relentless hitting and solid defense.
The offense exploded early, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Bryton Miller anchored the rally, driving in three RBIs and finishing with a game‑high three runs batted in, while the younger arms and outfielders backed him with timely hits and aggressive base running.
Defensively, the team limited Orland to just two hits after the first inning, with Sweet’s six strikeouts and a tight fielding crew preserving the lead. The collective effort reflected a squad that, despite being mostly underclassmen, played with the poise of seasoned veterans.
The moment was especially poignant for Coach Willie Church, who watched his son Gunner Church contribute two runs and strike out two batters. It marked another chapter in a family legacy of section championships, echoing the coach’s earlier triumph with his daughter in softball.
Looking Ahead
With only two seniors — Bryton Miller and Degan Palos — guiding a roster heavy on underclassmen, the team’s future looks bright. Miller, who will head to Lassen College next year, remains confident the program can return to the championship stage, citing the chemistry and resilience cultivated throughout the season.
