West Virginia Mountaineers Unveil Glossy Helmet for 2026 Season

A blend of classic and contemporary design marks the latest uniform evolution

A blend of eras

West Virginia University’s football program has introduced a refreshed helmet for the 2026 season, swapping the long‑standing matte white shell for a glossy surface that catches the light on the field.

The new shell bears a blue state decal centered around a gold flying ‘WV’, a design that fuses the modern aesthetic with nods to earlier eras of Mountaineer football.

The change follows a wider trend among collegiate programs that, after bold uniform experiments in the early 2010s, are now revisiting classic silhouettes while incorporating contemporary finishes.

The refresh is tied to the return of former coach Rich Rodriguez, whose earlier stint at WVU popularized glossy blue helmets, and it also pays homage to the design language of the Don Nehlen era that defined the program for decades.

While matte helmets have largely been retired from regular use, they still appear in special “coal Rush” uniforms, and the program noted that a gold helmet was last seen in a 1965 throwback set, underscoring the careful balance between tradition and innovation.
