West Virginia University’s women’s soccer team has erupted onto the national stage, opening the season with three consecutive victories and securing a top‑ten position for the first time since 2021.
A historic start
The Mountaineers’ 3-0 beginning represents their strongest opening stretch in two decades, catapulting them from No. 22 to No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches poll after a decisive triumph over Penn State.
Junior forward Sophia Nickel has been a driving force, registering a goal in each of the first three matches, a marked improvement from her single tally in the previous two seasons.
Defensively, the squad has been equally imposing, allowing just one goal across the opening trio, a statistic that bodes well for postseason ambitions.
Road challenges ahead
The upcoming schedule will test the team’s resilience, with first‑time road appearances against Princeton on Aug. 27 and Army on Aug. 30, opponents who field standout attackers Dylan Jovanovic and Kamryn McWhinney.
