Western Carolina University is staking its 2026 football campaign on a revamped group of wide receivers, a unit that must fill the void left by the departure of James Tyre and Malik Knight, who combined for over 1,600 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns last season.
Replacing the Legends
New wide receivers coach Corey Headley has infused the position group with an emphasis on preparation and complexity, promising players more nuanced route concepts and greater opportunities to create separation in space.
Among the returning veterans, AJ Colombo stands out with more than 1,000 career yards and a 2024 season that saw him catch 61 passes for 10 touchdowns, while sophomore Michael Rossin, a Freshman All‑America selection, looks to build on his 462‑yard debut.
Speedster Jai Boyd, who missed much of the previous year with an injury, is expected to bring a vertical threat, and veterans Marcus Striggles and Trey Walker have already impressed with acrobatic catches during early practices.
The roster also welcomes transfer Kale Woodburn and a six‑player freshman class highlighted by three‑star recruits Santana Carlos, Michael Davis Jr., Mouhamadou Mane, Corey Swint, Emanuel Palmer and Davon Washington, adding depth and future upside.
Head coach Kerwin Bell’s former attack set a high bar, and the new coaching staff hopes to sustain that explosiveness as the team opens the season against Eastern Kentucky on August 29, a game that will feature a special drone light show and a series of promotional events.
