At its recent meeting, the Wethersfield Board of Education took the opportunity to celebrate the 2025‑26 girls’ basketball squad, which captured an Elite 8 berth after a run that included a Fulton Regional title, a Lanark‑Eastland Sectional victory and a narrow loss to the eventual state champion.
Four players and coaches were present for the recognition while the remainder of the team was competing at a track meet, and individual honors were highlighted: Lana Scott earned IBCA second‑team All‑State and AP Honorable Mention, and Coach Todd Hanson was named IBCA District 11 Class 1A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year for the third straight year.

The board also highlighted academic achievements, noting that both the girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams received academic awards and that 32 members of the WJHS track team qualified for the state meet in 19 events. The Annawan‑Wethersfield Titans were recognized with the National Football Award for the second time in three years.
In business matters, the board approved modifications to the employee health‑insurance plan that are projected to save roughly $100,000 annually, joining the Central Illinois Educators Insurance Cooperative to lower premiums. Quotes were approved for repainting the cafeteria, upgrading lighting and installing air‑conditioning units in the elementary school.
The board welcomed Kasey Mitchell, the newly appointed Kewanee City Manager, who offered the city’s assistance to the district. A five‑year contract for Junior/Senior High School Principal Tyler Nichols was ratified, and a public hearing on the amended FY27 budget has been scheduled for June 30.
