The annual intrasquad scrimmage at Cal Poly’s Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium delivered a lively contest on Saturday, with the White team edging the Green side 2-1.
Annika Smith was the offensive catalyst, finding the net twice. Her first strike came in the 20th minute, a well‑timed header off a free‑kick delivery from Miah Thomas, and she doubled the lead in the 81st minute after a corner kick from Sam Liaty.
Green managed to pull level when Kenzie Herzing unleashed a long‑range shot in the 52nd minute, forcing the White defense to scramble.
Between the goals, both goalkeepers were busy. Alyssa Szarlacki made two saves for White, while Shannon Porubski turned away two attempts for Green, preserving the narrow margin.
The match served as a preview of what could be a breakout season for the Mustangs. Cal Poly will next host Pepperdine in an exhibition on Thursday at 6 p.m., before opening the 2026 campaign against UNLV on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the same venue.
Under head coach Bernardo Silva, the program has already tasted success, having captured its fourth Big West Tournament Championship and 14th overall title in 2025, a run that also saw the team reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 21 years.
The roster will feature 16 returning letterwinners, nine transfers and six freshmen, a blend that Silva believes can sustain momentum into the new season.
