Shot Clock and Basketball Revisions
Starting in the 2026‑27 season, non‑conference varsity basketball games will feature a 35‑second shot clock, a change intended to speed up play and align high school basketball with college and professional formats. Full league‑wide implementation is projected for the 2028‑29 season, pending a membership vote. The Board also adjusted tournament enrollment cutlines for divisional placement and mandated that the higher‑seeded team wear white jerseys and be designated the home team in all State Tournament basketball games.
Girls Wrestling Tournament Structure
The Board finalized the framework for a new Girls Wrestling Team Tournament that will debut in 2026‑27 with 64 participating teams. The individual tournament will rotate regional pairings annually, preventing the same two regionals from meeting in every sectional semifinal. Regionals and sectionals are slated to move one week earlier in 2027, to Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 respectively, and the seeding process for both boys and girls individual and team events has been standardized.
Hockey Overtime and Officials
In hockey, the overtime format has been extended to a 17‑minute sudden‑victory period, with a five‑minute four‑on‑four sudden‑victory segment if the game remains tied. All sectional and State Tournament games will now require a four‑official system. These changes follow the adoption of longer overtime periods and a revised tournament procedure for the sport.
Conference Realignment Shifts
Conference realignment will transition to a four‑year schedule beginning with the 2027‑28 cycle, while football‑only realignment will continue on its current two‑year rotation. The Board also approved three fast‑track realignment requests for 2026‑27, including Rhinelander’s move to the Wisconsin Valley Conference for girls golf, Portage’s transfer to the Badger Conference for girls golf, girls swimming and diving, and boys tennis, and Racine St. Catherine’s entry into the Southeast Conference for girls golf.
