Last Year's Dominance
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association wrapped up its state high school football championships over a two‑day stretch, a schedule that turned the spotlight on the powerhouses of northeast Wisconsin. Five of the fourteen teams that took the field hailed from that region, underscoring its recent grip on the titles.
Division 1 saw Arrowhead edge out Bay Port 18‑15 in a tightly contested final, while Division 2 produced a 28‑14 victory for West De Pere over Notre Dame. In Division 3, Grafton slipped past Reedsburg 17‑15, and Division 4 went to Winneconne, which held off Little Chute 28‑22. Division 5 was claimed by Mayville, who outscored Northwestern 42‑32, and Division 6 saw Darlington dominate Edgar 42‑18. The seventh‑division crown went to Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic, who defeated Cochrane‑Fountain City 35‑19.
This Year's Schedule
This year’s championship games are slated for November 19 and 20 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, where the larger schools will battle for supremacy. The 8‑man football title game will be held a week earlier, on November 14, at South Wood County Stadium in Wisconsin Rapids.
Looking Ahead
A year ago, McDonell Central Catholic posted a 22‑0 shutout over Gilman in the 8‑man final, a performance that added to the growing reputation of small‑school programs in the state. Fans and coaches alike are already marking their calendars, eager to see whether the northeast Wisconsin surge will continue and which newcomers might break through when the final whistles sound.
