Divisions reshaped as WIAA finalizes assignments
The WIAA Board of Control rejected a proposal to expand the state basketball tournament, a move that would have broadened the postseason field. Instead, the association released the official division and sectional assignments for both boys and girls teams, setting the stage for the upcoming season.
Among the changes, the West Allis Central boys program earned promotion from Division 2 to Division 1, while a handful of other squads successfully petitioned to drop a division. Several schools, including Chesterton Academy of St. John Paul II, Impact Christian Academy, St. Ignatius Chesterton Academy and Washington Island, chose to sit out the playoffs altogether.
The realignment also reflected performance metrics, with six schools meeting the tournament performance factor threshold that traditionally triggers elevation. Each of those institutions appealed their assigned tier, and the board’s rulings produced a mixed outcome, leaving some teams in higher divisions and others retained in their original brackets.
Coaches and athletic directors say the new configuration will affect scheduling, travel plans and competitive balance, but the WIAA says the process remains transparent and grounded in data.
