A scheduling showdown
The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WIAA) is preparing for a major scheduling challenge as the Boys Basketball State Tournament approaches its 2027 edition.
A recent shift in the Big Ten Men’s Hockey Tournament schedule could force the championship game to be played at the Kohl Center on a Friday night, directly overlapping with the tournament’s opening session.
Officials have confirmed that the conflict would be limited to that Friday night slot, leaving the rest of the week’s games untouched.
Why the conflict matters
Most other Big Ten states have sidestepped this issue by either holding their tournaments on different dates or by using separate venues that do not clash with the hockey championship.
When the WIAA first examined the possibility of moving affected games to the UW Fieldhouse, the smaller seating capacity and limited amenities made the alternative unattractive.
Instead, the association settled on a schedule adjustment that would push the tournament into Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, spreading the matches across three days to accommodate the conflict.
While this re‑timing preserves the overall tournament experience, it introduces a host of logistical hurdles for participating teams, traveling fans and season‑ticket holders who must rearrange travel plans on short notice.
Looking ahead
Adding to the complexity, the 2030 edition of the Big Ten hockey semifinals is slated for the same weekend as the basketball tournament, meaning the clash could re‑emerge in the next decade.
The WIAA says the revised schedule is the best option to preserve a high‑quality tournament experience despite the inconvenience.
