Northern Michigan University’s football team opened its season with a 41‑19 loss to Minnesota State‑Moorhead, a result that left the Wildcats searching for answers despite moments of offensive promise.
Offensive Sparks Amid Defensive Lapses
Quarterbacks Liam Oczkowski and Duke Shovald combined for 272 passing yards, with Oczkowski completing 18 of 29 attempts for 216 yards and an ill‑timed red‑zone interception that halted a drive that had already yielded a 46‑yard touchdown to Isaac Olson.
Running back Noah Dobert contributed 80 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown, while freshman Wilson Ptacek added 61 yards to keep the attack moving.
Minnesota State‑Moorhead answered with four touchdowns, highlighted by a 73‑yard rush from Drew Huebner and three additional scoring runs that overwhelmed the Wildcats’ line of scrimmage.
The defensive unit struggled, allowing multiple turnovers, sacks and failing to stop the run, a factor that proved decisive as linebackers Logan McGraw and Jax Hertel recorded seven and five tackles respectively.
Looking ahead, NMU will host the Tiffin Dragons in their home opener on September 5 at 6 p.m. inside the Superior Dome, hoping to convert early offensive moments into a victory.
