Wild’s 2026 Draft: A Small but Strategic Class

GM Bill Guerin trims the draft to three prospects, targeting immediate needs and a top‑line center

The Minnesota Wild entered the 2026 NHL Draft with a plan to keep the roster lean, selecting only three prospects — the smallest draft class in the franchise’s history. Each pick was chosen not for sheer quantity but for the specific role it could fill in the team’s push for immediate competitiveness.

A Draft Defined by Necessity

First‑round selection Adam Andersson, a 17‑year‑old Swedish center, arrived with a reputation for slick playmaking and a responsible two‑way game. He logged 17 points in 30 games for Leksands IF’s under‑20 side and was a key contributor as Sweden captured the 2026 IIHF Under‑18 World Championship.

The second pick, winger Kayden Lemire, brings a physical presence and a strong wrist shot. Standing 6‑foot‑4, the Edmonton native posted 29 points in 68 games with the Prince George Cougars of the WHL and is currently working to sharpen his skating ahead of his professional debut.

Rounding out the class, tall Czech goaltender Filip Ruzicka impressed with size and positioning. In his rookie WHL season he went 26‑14‑1 with a 0.00 goals‑against record and earned a nomination for the Del Wilson Memorial Trophy, highlighting his potential between the pipes.

General Manager Bill Guerin explained that the draft was less about volume and more about filling defined holes. By trading away additional picks, the Wild secured Andersson, Lemire and Ruzicka, targeting a top‑line center and reinforcing depth on the wings and in net.

Guerin emphasized that the club remains competitive and will continue to address remaining gaps through free agency and future trades. The modest draft class reflects a calculated approach: bring in talent that can contribute right away while preserving flexibility for the next wave of acquisitions.
