Will Davis, the former head coach of Lamar University's baseball program, has been announced as the new skipper of the University of Houston Cougars. His appointment marks the end of a ten‑year tenure at Lamar and the start of a fresh era for Houston baseball, where the focus is squarely on constructing a competitive 2027 squad.
Building a Coaching Core and a War Room
Davis has already secured two trusted assistants, Scott Hatten and Jace Hutchins, to join his staff. In addition, he plans to set up a dedicated ‘war room’ at his home as the college baseball transfer portal opens, a move intended to streamline communications and accelerate the recruitment process.
The coach has begun an intensive dialogue with every player on the UH roster, discussing their futures and the opportunities ahead. Seven current athletes, including starting first baseman Riley Jackson and right fielder Xavier Perez, have entered the transfer portal, signaling a period of transition for the program.
Davis's deep familiarity with the Texas baseball landscape is expected to be a major asset as he seeks to attract top talent. By leveraging regional connections and a clear vision for player development, he aims to restore the Cougars to prominence in the coming years.
