Will Moon, a longtime benefactor of the University of Iowa and the iconic owner of the Iowa 80 truck stop, died on July 16 at the age of 64.
Born and raised in the shadow of the truck stop, Moon spent his early years learning the rhythms of the road before taking the helm of the business that would become a landmark for travelers across the Midwest.
A Legacy of Generosity
His devotion to the Hawkeye community ran deep. Moon established the Moon Family Head Football Coach position, creating a permanent tribute to his love of Iowa athletics, and he and his wife, Renee Breckenridge Moon, built an endowment that supports the football program and the Kinnick Edge Campaign.
University of Iowa officials highlighted the breadth of his impact, noting that the leadership role in the football program now bears his name as a lasting reminder of his commitment.
Coach Kirk Ferentz and athletics director Beth Goetz both praised Moon for his kindness and his unwavering support, describing him as a true friend to the university and its students.
Visitation will be held on July 20, followed by a funeral service on July 21, giving the community an opportunity to honor his memory.
